Rochdale AFC Changing Lives Sessions Kick Off

We’re excited to share that Petrus has teamed up with Rochdale AFC Community Trust to launch a brand-new initiative designed to support people experiencing homelessness or living in supported accommodation. Rochdale AFC Changing Lives is now underway, offering free, inclusive football sessions that aim to boost mental health, physical wellbeing, and social connection.

At its core, the programme is about much more than football. It’s about creating opportunities. Participants will be able to build confidence, develop new skills, and explore pathways into volunteering, education, and employment. For many, it will be a stepping stone toward long-term stability and improved wellbeing and a chance to feel part of a community again.

A partnership with a shared purpose

This collaboration builds on the success of last year’s Sleep Out at the Crown Oil Arena, where supporters braved a night outdoors to raise awareness and funds for homelessness. The event raised almost £8,000, split between Petrus and Rochdale AFC Community Trust. The Trust chose to use their share to help establish and sustain this new programme, strengthening the partnership between our organisations.

Scott Webster, Deputy Director of Rochdale AFC Community Trust, spoke about the importance of the initiative:

“This is a great opportunity for both charities to continue working together to help combat homelessness within the borough of Rochdale. Rochdale AFC Changing Lives will give individuals the chance to improve their health and wellbeing, develop a sense of community and belonging, and gain valuable skills for future progression.”

At Petrus, we know how powerful sport can be, not just for physical health, but for confidence, connection, and hope. Yet many people experiencing homelessness face barriers that prevent them from taking part. That’s why this partnership matters.

Jane Crompton, Service Manager at Petrus, shared her thoughts:

“Taking part in sports like football can have a huge impact on mental health and wellbeing, but many people experiencing homelessness face barriers to taking part. Our partnership with Rochdale AFC Community Trust helps remove those barriers, giving people a safe, welcoming place to get active, build connections and look after their wellbeing out on the pitch.”
