Another successful year for Rochdale Sleepout

Rochdale Sleepout

On Friday 29 March 30 volunteers and staff from Petrus Community spent one night experiencing what it was like to sleep rough.

Armed with only a cardboard box, blankets and a sleeping bag, the Rochdale Sleepout aimed to raise awareness of some of the issues faced by those who are homeless.

The event took place from 7pm to 7am at Rochdale AFC’s Crown Oil Arena in Rochdale.

Liz Varey, Service Manager at the Petrus Hub, took part for her third year in a row. Liz said: “It was amazing that so many people gave up their Friday night to join us and experience a night under the stars.

“I spent a lot of the evening talking to people about the true reality for the people we work with. Despite how uncomfortable we all were, it was only for one night and we all returned to our warm, comfortable homes.

“It is easy to see why so many of Petrus’ service users are physically and mentally exhausted. I struggled all weekend with the effects of that one night sleeping outside. My body is still aching, and the tiredness has not subsided.

“I appreciate more than ever the place that I call home, and the love and kindness I receive daily from family and friends”.

Petrus would like to thank everyone who took part or has donated so far.

As Petrus is part of Rochdale Mayor’s Charities, the event also supports:

  • British Heart Foundation
  • Moorend Development Trust
  • Parkinson’s UK
  • Rochdale Community Partnership
  • Springhill Hospice.
