As part of B&Q's Community Days programme, a dedicated team of colleagues volunteered their time, skills and resources to improve our Pier Allotment, making a real difference to a space that plays an important role in supporting wellbeing, recovery and community connection.
During their volunteering day, the team completed a range of improvements across the site, including resurfacing two polytunnels, repainting raised beds, and upgrading our storage area with new lighting and shelving. Their hard work has helped revitalise the allotment and ensure it remains a welcoming and accessible environment for everyone who uses it.
The allotment provides a safe and supportive space where Petrus service users, volunteers and members of the local community can connect with nature, develop new skills and benefit from the positive impact that green spaces can have on mental and physical wellbeing.
The improvements made by the B&Q team have also helped us rebuild an area that had previously been damaged by anti-social behaviour, while creating a more wildlife-friendly and sustainable growing space.
Kim Evans, Therapeutic Horticulture Practitioner at Petrus, said:
"We are delighted to have had the team from B&Q support us by giving up their time to improve our space. They have transformed our community allotment, helping us rebuild one of the areas damaged by anti-social behaviour and refresh our raised beds with new paint. Their help will enable us to continue to support our service users in their recoveries whilst also promoting the benefits of being in nature and biodiversity to the community. A huge thank you to B&Q and their colleagues for making this happen."
Partnerships like this demonstrate the powerful impact that businesses can have when they invest in their local communities. By volunteering their time and expertise, the B&Q Halifax team has helped create a better environment for those accessing our services today and for many years to come.
A special thank you goes to Julie Rodd and the entire team at B&Q Halifax for their generosity, enthusiasm and commitment to supporting Petrus. Their contribution will have a lasting impact on our service users, volunteers and the wider community.
We are incredibly grateful for their support.
